Make CBD Liquid yourself: Instructions and what you need to know

The DIY trend hasn't stopped at CBD. More and more people are wondering if they can just mix their own CBD Vape Liquid instead of buying it ready-made. The idea sounds tempting: full control over the ingredients, custom strength, maybe even cheaper. Let's take an honest look at whether this really works in practice and who it's actually worth the effort for.

What exactly is CBD Liquid?

CBD Liquid is a liquid preparation specially developed for use in e-cigarettes, Vape pens or vaporizers. The base consists of carriers like propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG), in which CBD is dissolved. The finished Liquid is vaporized and inhaled, which means: the active ingredient enters the bloodstream via the lungs and its effects unfolds relatively quickly.

Compared to CBD oil, Liquid is not meant to be ingested. It's designed specifically for vaporizing and, in finished products, often comes with coordinated flavors that make the vaping experience much more pleasant than pure CBD. You can read here what CBD basically does in the body.

What ingredients do you need?

There are three essential ingredients if you want to make CBD Liquid yourself. Without one of them, mixing won't work properly.

• PG (Propylene Glycol): Provides a more intense flavor and a stronger throat hit. Almost always combined with VG.
• VG (Vegetable Glycerin): Produces more vapor, makes the Liquid thicker, and gives a smoother draw. Ideal for anyone who cares about clouds.
• CBD Isolate: This is the actual active ingredient. CBD isolate comes as a white powder or crystals and contains pure cannabidiol, without other cannabinoids or THC.

Optional ingredients like terpenes or flavors can be added to give the Liquid character. If you want a bit more depth in the profile, you can use broad spectrum CBD instead of pure isolate. That contains other cannabinoids like CBG or CBN in addition to CBD, but no THC. Full spectrum, on the other hand, contains the legally permitted residual amount of THC and is less suitable for homemade Liquids, since it's harder to control the dosage.

Making CBD Liquid yourself: step by step

With a little patience and the right equipment, the basic mixture is quick to make. You'll need a digital precision scale accurate to at least 0.01 g, syringes or pipettes for measuring, and a small mixing bottle made of glass or food-grade plastic.

Step 1: Set the ratio. A common base ratio is 50/50 PG/VG. If you want a smoother vapor, use more VG, about 30/70.

Step 2: Dose the CBD. For a 10 ml Liquid with 600 mg CBD, you need 600 mg CBD isolate powder. That sounds like a lot, but it gives a concentration of 6%, which is standard for most finished Liquids. Step 3: Dissolve the isolate in PG. CBD isolate dissolves better in PG than in VG. First, mix the powder with the PG portion and gently heat (not above 50 degrees) until everything is clear.

Step 4: Add VG. After dissolving, stir in the VG and shake well. The Liquid should be clear and even.

Step 5: Add flavors optionally. Terpenes or ready-made Liquid flavors are usually enough at 1 to 3 percent of the total volume. Less is often more here.

Storage: Store cool, dark, and sealed. Glass keeps flavors stable longer than plastic.

Advantages and disadvantages of DIY CBD Liquids

Mixing yourself has real benefits, but also some downsides you shouldn't ignore.

• Cheaper for larger quantities: If you vape regularly and mix bigger batches, you can buy base ingredients at a better price.

Disadvantages ❌

• Prone to mistakes: Dosing errors happen quickly, especially at first without a good scale.
• Learning curve with flavor: Balancing flavors takes time. Homemade mixes rarely taste perfect on the first try.
• No lab analysis: You don't have external testing of the actual CBD content. What the scale shows doesn't always end up exactly in the Liquid.

The catch: Without a lab analysis, you can’t give the recipient a reliable statement about the actual CBD content. For personal use, that’s usually fine, but as a gift you should keep it in mind. If you want to play it safe, it’s better to give a ready-made, tested product from a well-known brand.

• Making your own CBD Liquid makes sense if you know what you’re doing, buy base ingredients in larger amounts, and enjoy experimenting.
