Make CBD Liquid yourself: Instructions and what you need to know

The DIY trend hasn't stopped at CBD. More and more people are wondering if they can just mix their own CBD Vape Liquid instead of buying it ready-made. The idea sounds tempting: full control over the ingredients, custom strength, maybe even cheaper. Let's take an honest look at whether this really works in practice and who it's actually worth the effort for.

What exactly is CBD Liquid?

CBD Liquid is a liquid preparation specially developed for use in e-cigarettes, Vape pens or vaporizers. The base consists of carriers like propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG), in which CBD is dissolved. The finished Liquid is vaporized and inhaled, which means: the active ingredient enters the bloodstream via the lungs and its effects unfolds relatively quickly.

Compared to CBD oil, Liquid is not meant to be ingested. It's designed specifically for vaporizing and, in finished products, often comes with coordinated flavors that make the vaping experience much more pleasant than pure CBD. You can read here what CBD basically does in the body.

What ingredients do you need?

There are three essential ingredients if you want to make CBD Liquid yourself. Without one of them, mixing won't work properly.

  • PG (Propylene Glycol): Provides a more intense flavor and a stronger throat hit. Almost always combined with VG.
  • VG (Vegetable Glycerin): Produces more vapor, makes the Liquid thicker, and gives a smoother draw. Ideal for anyone who cares about clouds.
  • CBD Isolate: This is the actual active ingredient. CBD isolate comes as a white powder or crystals and contains pure cannabidiol, without other cannabinoids or THC.

Optional ingredients like terpenes or flavors can be added to give the Liquid character. If you want a bit more depth in the profile, you can use broad spectrum CBD instead of pure isolate. That contains other cannabinoids like CBG or CBN in addition to CBD, but no THC. Full spectrum, on the other hand, contains the legally permitted residual amount of THC and is less suitable for homemade Liquids, since it's harder to control the dosage.

CBD Isolate: the purest base

CBD isolate powder is the best choice for DIY mixing. It contains no THC, can be dosed precisely, and dissolves well in PG. In our range of CBD isolates you'll find tested quality for your project.

Making CBD Liquid yourself: step by step

With a little patience and the right equipment, the basic mixture is quick to make. You'll need a digital precision scale accurate to at least 0.01 g, syringes or pipettes for measuring, and a small mixing bottle made of glass or food-grade plastic.

Step 1: Set the ratio. A common base ratio is 50/50 PG/VG. If you want a smoother vapor, use more VG, about 30/70.

Step 2: Dose the CBD. For a 10 ml Liquid with 600 mg CBD, you need 600 mg CBD isolate powder. That sounds like a lot, but it gives a concentration of 6%, which is standard for most finished Liquids. Which strength is generally right for you, we explain in the article about concentration of CBD Liquids.

Step 3: Dissolve the isolate in PG. CBD isolate dissolves better in PG than in VG. First, mix the powder with the PG portion and gently heat (not above 50 degrees) until everything is clear.

Step 4: Add VG. After dissolving, stir in the VG and shake well. The Liquid should be clear and even.

Step 5: Add flavors optionally. Terpenes or ready-made Liquid flavors are usually enough at 1 to 3 percent of the total volume. Less is often more here.

Storage: Store cool, dark, and sealed. Glass keeps flavors stable longer than plastic.

Advantages and disadvantages of DIY CBD Liquids

Mixing yourself has real benefits, but also some downsides you shouldn't ignore.

Advantages

  • Full control over ingredients: You know exactly what's in it. No unknown additives, no surprises.
  • Custom CBD strength: You can adjust the concentration freely, start low and increase as needed.
  • Cheaper for larger quantities: If you vape regularly and mix bigger batches, you can buy base ingredients at a better price.

Disadvantages

  • Prone to mistakes: Dosing errors happen quickly, especially at first without a good scale.
  • Learning curve with flavor: Balancing flavors takes time. Homemade mixes rarely taste perfect on the first try.
  • No lab analysis: You don't have external testing of the actual CBD content. What the scale shows doesn't always end up exactly in the Liquid.

Better to buy ready-made CBD Liquids

If you want to save yourself the effort or just want to know what's established on the market, you'll find a selection of brands with us that have proven themselves in Berlin and all over Germany.

  • Ventura: One of the best-known CBD Liquid brands out there. Ventura offers Liquids in 600 mg in numerous flavors from Blueberry Kush and Lemon Haze to Watermelon Kush. The flavors are clearly defined.
  • Harmony: British brand with a strong focus on purity and transparency. Harmony's Liquids come in 600 mg versions and classic flavors like OG Kush, Moroccan mint, or pink lemonade. Especially popular with people who like a subtle flavor profile.

DIY vs. ready-made CBD Liquids: a comparison

Ready-made Liquids come with well-balanced flavors, tested quality, and clear concentration information from the lab. That’s a real advantage you’ll only get close to after lots of trial and error when mixing yourself.

DIY Liquid Ready-made Liquid
Taste Depends on experience Professionally balanced
Quality Varies Consistent, lab-tested
Price Cheaper in large quantities Clear price per bottle
Effort High None
Control Completely in your hands Limited to brand choice

Ready-made products clearly win when it comes to taste and consistency. If you only vape occasionally and don’t want to become a hobby mixer, you’re usually much better off with a ready-made Liquid.

Is the effort really worth it?

Honest answer: it depends. DIY makes sense mainly if you’re making more than 50 ml at a time and know exactly which PG/VG ratio fits your device. Then buying base ingredients pays off. For the occasional vaper, the effort is hardly worth it.

Ready to go and vape right away

Don’t feel like dealing with scales and mixing ratios? Our CBD Liquids from Ventura, Harmony, and Canapuff are THC-free, lab-tested, and available in different strengths and flavors. Ready to vape, no experiments needed.

If you’re just starting out with CBD, I definitely recommend trying a few ready-made Liquids first. That way, you’ll find out which strength and flavor suit you before you start mixing yourself. If you jump into DIY without experience, you’ll quickly waste money on batches you don’t like.

As a personal gift: DIY with a twist

Homemade CBD Liquid can actually be a unique gift, especially if you know what the other person likes. Custom flavor blend, personal strength, your own label on the bottle. The creative approach has its charm, no doubt.

The catch: Without a lab analysis, you can’t give the recipient a reliable statement about the actual CBD content. For personal use, that’s usually fine, but as a gift you should keep it in mind. If you want to play it safe, it’s better to give a ready-made, tested product from a well-known brand.

Make your own CBD Liquid or not?

  • Making your own CBD Liquid makes sense if you know what you’re doing, buy base ingredients in larger amounts, and enjoy experimenting.
  • For everyone else, buying a ready-made, tested Liquids from brands like Ventura, Harmony, or Canapuff is the more practical choice.
  • Taste, consistency, and quality assurance are much easier to achieve with ready-made products.

The DIY route is definitely an interesting one. But it takes patience, the right equipment, and the willingness to throw out a failed batch now and then. The smartest way: start with a ready-made Liquid, get some experience, and then gradually try mixing yourself.

How much CBD isolate do you need for 10 ml Liquid?

For a concentration of 600 mg per 10 ml, you need 600 mg of pure CBD isolate powder. That corresponds to 6% and is a good starting point for beginners. If you’re unsure what amount generally makes sense, you’ll find it in the article on the the right CBD concentration a good guideline.

Is homemade CBD Liquid legal in Germany?

CBD is legal in Germany as long as the THC content is below 0.2 percent. If you use pure CBD isolate, you’re on the safe side, since isolate contains no THC. The legal framework can change, so it’s worth keeping an eye on developments.

Can any CBD isolate be used for mixing?

Basically yes, but the quality makes a big difference. Make sure you go for isolates with a certificate and lab analysis. Low-quality isolate can contain impurities or dissolve poorly in PG, which makes the finished Liquid cloudy or clumpy.
