Cannabidiol (CBD): Everything you need to know at a glance
It’s that combo of three letters you see on more and more products: CBD. The abbreviation stands for cannabidiol and appears on oils, foods, or skincare products, often next to a green hemp leaf. Cannabidiol has also moved into the focus of research and medical interest because of the claim that the substance CBD could also be used in health-related areas. In some cases, use on prescription is possible. However, CBD is not approved as an active pharmaceutical ingredient. In this blog post you’ll find out what cannabidiol is and what it does in the body.
What is cannabidiol?
Cannabidiol, or CBD for short, was discovered in 1940 and is extracted from the leaves and Flowers of the female cannabis plant. The cannabis plant itself is a crop and useful plant with thousands of years of history that made its way from Asia to the rest of the world. Unlike THC, CBD has no psychoactive effects and therefore does not fall under the Narcotics Act. CBD is one of hundreds of cannabinoids in the hemp plant. The areas of use are very diverse: you can use CBD in everything from oils to foods, from incense sticks to aromatherapy. The substance is especially interesting for industry, which uses the hemp plant to produce synthetic fibers. To ensure cannabidiol can be used safely, a few important rules have to be followed.
Cannabidiol: Requirements for sale
As with all cannabinoids, there are some important rules that must be followed for cultivation and sale:
- The substances must be extracted from EU-certified hemp plants . This is the only way to ensure quality and purity.
- The residual THC content in the products must not exceed the limit value of 0.2%.
- The products must be processed. Selling pure CBD is only possible under strict conditions.
- An intoxicating effects must be ruled out.
Under these conditions, CBD products are freely available in Germany and are popular with customers thanks to their easy use. Through purification and distillation the THC is removed from the products, which is why CBD can be used without issue. It is known in medical research and is being investigated for possible pharmaceutical uses.
Researchers have, however, been able to provide some remarkable insights into the so-called hemp cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are very similar to our body’s own endocannabinoids. Endocannabinoids are cannabis-like substances that the body produces itself. They are part of our endogenous cannabinoid system. You can find out more about the endocannabinoid system in the body in our blog.
effects of cannabidiol in the body
In connection with cannabidiol, many people wonder whether the active ingredient has an intoxicating effect. After all, CBD is closely related to THC, which is known for causing a high. THC and CBD are the components of cannabis that are most thoroughly researched in science. However, research on CBD is not yet very advanced.
One thing has been scientifically proven though: CBD has no psychoactive properties and therefore cannot produce a high. Anyone who consumes CBD does not experience a “high feeling.” This is because CBD interacts differently with the receptors in the human body than THC does. Many people today want to benefit from the health-promoting properties of the hemp plant – without getting high and without becoming dependent. With cannabidiol, that’s possible.
Cannabidiol and its benefits
The non-psychoactive, i.e. non-intoxicating, CBD is approved as a medicinal product and can be prescribed by a doctor. Cannabidiol is also used in food production. Below are some of the advantages of CBD:
- CBD can cancel out the intoxicating effects of THC, as it is an antagonist to THC,
- it binds to the receptors of the body’s own cannabinoid system,
- it is legally available in processed form, e.g. in CBD cosmetic products,
- it has been removed from the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) list of banned substances.
- Research on CBD in medicine is not yet complete and will certainly deliver some interesting findings in the coming years.
